What to Expect at Your First Visit

Colonoscopy Saves Lives

Visiting a gastroenterologist for the first time can feel overwhelming, especially if you're experiencing digestive symptoms or have been referred by your primary care provider. At WV Gastroenterology & Endoscopy, our goal is to make your first visit as comfortable, informative, and stress-free as possible.

Our experienced team is committed to providing compassionate, personalized care while helping you understand your digestive health and the treatment options available. Whether you're visiting for routine screening, chronic digestive concerns, or a specific gastrointestinal condition, we're here to guide you every step of the way.

Preparing for Your Appointment

To help us provide the most accurate evaluation, please arrive a few minutes early and bring the following items:

  • A valid photo ID

  • Your insurance card

  • A list of current medications and supplements

  • Previous medical records or test results, if available

  • A list of your symptoms and any questions you would like to discuss

Having this information available helps our providers better understand your medical history and develop a personalized treatment plan.

Meeting Your Gastroenterology Provider

During your first visit, your provider will spend time learning about your overall health and any digestive concerns you may be experiencing.

You may be asked about:

  • Your current symptoms

  • How long your symptoms have been present

  • Your medical history Previous surgeries or digestive procedures

  • Family history of digestive diseases or colorectal cancer

  • Current medications and allergies

  • Diet and lifestyle habits

This conversation helps your provider identify possible causes of your symptoms and determine the most appropriate next steps.

Your Physical Examination

Depending on your symptoms, your provider may perform a physical examination, including an abdominal assessment. This examination helps evaluate areas of discomfort and identify signs that may require additional testing.

If necessary, your provider may recommend diagnostic procedures such as:

  • Colonoscopy

  • Upper Endoscopy (EGD)

  • Capsule Endoscopy

  • Breath Testing

  • Laboratory testing

  • Imaging studies

Any recommended procedures will be fully explained, and our staff will answer any questions you may have.

Developing Your Personalized Care Plan

After reviewing your medical history and examination, your provider will discuss your diagnosis or possible causes of your symptoms. Together, you'll create a treatment plan that may include lifestyle recommendations, medications, additional testing, or follow-up appointments.

Our goal is to help you understand your condition and feel confident about your treatment options.
