PREP INSTRUCTIONS

CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY

MANAGE YOUR MEDICATIONS

3 DAYS BEFORE THE TEST: Stop Iron pills, Antacids and Carafate

DAY BEFORE THE TEST

TAKE YOUR MEDICATIONS AS USUAL

DO NOT TAKE SOLID FOOD ALL DAY

EAT ONLY CLEAR LIQUIDS ALL DAY

  • Clear broth --chicken, beef or vegetable -- no noodles

  • Plain Jello -- no red or purple

  • Tea and coffee -- no milk or cream

  • Sprite, 7-UP and ginger ale

  • Apple juice and lemonade

  • Gatorade, Powerade, Kool-Aid and Crystal Light -- no red or purple

  • Popsicles and Italian ice -- no red or purple and no added fruit pieces

  • DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS --- nothing red or purple

  • 6 PM: DRINK YOUR PREP. Mix three (3) 17 gram packages of Miralax in 12 ounces of liquid and drink it.

  • 10 PM: DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER 10 PM -- INCLUDING WATER. You can take your medications with a small sip of water.

DAY OF THE TEST

6 AM: Take your morning medications. Do not take any medication 2 hours before the test. Do not smoke.

After Ingesting The Capsule

Do not eat or drink for 2 hours. You may have a small snack after 4 hours and resume normal diet after 6 hours. Walk throughout the day -- it helps pass the capsule more quickly. Capsule usually passes in approximately 8-12 hours.

Follow the instructions to collect the capsule when you move your bowels.

Avoid any powerful electromagnetic fields -- such as MRI machines -- until you have collected the capsule.

AFTER COLLECTING THE CAPSULE

After you have retrieved the capsule -- mail it in the package that was given to you. You can now resume all activities and regular eating habits.
